Yakima Bishop Carlos Sevilla has apologized to 40 Catholic churches in the diocese for hiring a man he knew was under investigation for viewing child pornography. Sevilla asked for forgiveness in a letter read at Sunday services. Sevilla hired Juan Jose Gonzalez Rios five years ago to work at retreat in Cowiche (cow-ICH'-ee). Gonzales faces four charges of encouraging child sex abuse from when he was a student at Mount Angel Seminary in Oregon where he was dismissed in 2003. Authorities did not issue an arrest warrant until 2005. He was arrested last month after a traffic stop and is jailed in Yakima. --- Information from: Yakima Herald-Republic, http://www.yakima-herald.com Copyright © 2008 The Seattle Times Company
