DES MOINES — For two-time Olympic gold medalist Steven Lopez, the trip to the Beijing Games in August just got better.

Siblings Mark and Diana Lopez of Sugar Land, Texas, won taekwondo matches Saturday at the Olympic Trials in Des Moines to join Steven, on the U.S. team.

They're the first set of three siblings on a U.S. team at the Summer Games since 1904, when three Tritschler brothers competed on the men's gymnastics squad.

"My expectations were for both of them to make it," said Steven Lopez, who had already qualified for Beijing. "If only one would have of made it, of course we would have been happy, but it wouldn't have completed the dream I had going into this Olympic Games."

Diana Lopez landed a backside kick to beat 2004 Olympic silver medalist Nia Abdallah of Houston 1-0 in overtime in a featherweight match. Lopez ended the match with 29 seconds left in the sudden death session.

Mark Lopez struck with a kick with 10 seconds left to beat his training partner Chris Martinez 3-2. Then he spun cartwheels on the mat and did a back flip.

In the flyweight division, 17-year-old Charlotte Craig of Murrieta, Calif., beat Anees Hasnain of McKinney, Texas, 4-2.

Phelps sleeps in:

Michael Phelps slept through a preliminary heat for the 400-meter free but came back to win the 400 individual medley Saturday night at a Grand Prix meet in Columbus, Ohio.

"I had no idea I was going to be a headline," Phelps said with a grin. "I got, like, four different text messages asking if I really fell asleep. I just started laughing."

Phelps said while he was stretching on a lower dive platform he apparently dozed off, preventing him from qualifying for the 400 free.

"I was kind of stretching, so … you could say I was stretching," he joked. "(Coach Bob Bowman) always gives me a hard time about not stretching. I was holding that stretch for at least 10 or 15 minutes. My legs were definitely stretched."

Phelps breezed to his win in the 400 IM in 4 minutes, 13.73 seconds, more than 3 seconds faster than runner-up Erik Vendt.

Katie Hoff set the tone in the night's first event when she put up a quick 4:34.49 in the 400 IM to beat Kaitlin Sandeno by 9 seconds.

In the men's 50 freestyle, Fred Bousquet won in 21.90 seconds, holding off Cesar Cielo and Gary Hall Jr. Hall, who has won the 50 free at the last two Olympics, was pleased with his time of 22.29.

U.S. women roll:

Natasha Kai scored two goals as the USA beat Mexico 3-1 to win Group A at the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament Sunday.

The USA plays Costa Rica on Wednesday in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, with an Olympic berth on the line. Mexico will play Canada in the other semifinal.

Abby Wambach scored in the 35th minute to give the Americans a 2-1 lead. Wambach scored two goals in the USA's 6-0 rout of Jamaica on Friday.

Briefly:

Jeremy Wariner, Sanya Richards and Tyson Gay looked strong running on relays at the Texas Relays in Austin on Saturday. Wariner's 1,600 relay team cruised to a win in 3 minutes, 0.65 seconds, the fastest mark in the world this year. Richards ran the anchor leg for the USA Red team that won the women's invitational 400 relay with a time of 42.25, also the fastest in the world this year. …Two-time Olympian Abdi Abdirahman defended his 10-kilometer road racing national championship Saturday in Richmond, Va. Abdirahman won the race in 28 minutes, 32 seconds, beating Dan Browne by 4 seconds. In the women's race, which did not determine a national champion, Leah Kiprono won in 34:19.
