The General Motors truck plant in Oshawa, which has been idle for more than a month because of a United States parts strike, will temporarily reopen soon.

General Motors of Canada Ltd. will recall more than 2,000 workers and resume production of Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups on April 21 for three weeks, even if a strike at American Axle and Manufacturing Holdings Inc. continues, the auto giant said yesterday.

GM did not indicate where it will obtain axle parts, but union officials said the company will probably redirect Mexican-made components from a U.S. assembly plant that builds sport-utility vehicles.

The company is idling a sport-utility vehicle operation in Arlington, Tex., and moving from one to two shifts at a pickup-truck plant in Fort Wayne, Ind., next week.

Analysts have speculated the company is redirecting parts to truck plants because of concerns that low inventories could start hurting showroom business.

In resuming operations in Oshawa, a GM spokesperson said, the plant would be making sure no problems occur with part changes this fall for the 2009 model year.

The American Axle strike by 3,600 workers started in late February at parts plants in Michigan and New York. Talks had been at an impasse, but Reuters reported the company said yesterday negotiations will resume tomorrow.
