NEW YORK (Reuters) Discount retailer TJX Cos Wednesday said it will pay up to $24 million as part of a settlement with MasterCard over a security breach that put credit card data for tens of millions of shoppers at risk.
The parent of the T.J. Maxx and Marshalls clothing chains said the pre-tax payout will go to MasterCard issuers worldwide that issued cards potentially affected by computer breaches. MasterCard is the world's second-largest card network. TJX in November announced a related $40.9 million agreement with Visa, the largest card network. Framingham, Massachusetts-based TJX disclosed in March 2007 that hackers had stolen data from about 45.7 million credit and debit cards from July 2005 through January 2007, covering transactions dating as far back as December 2002. The theft is one of the world's largest reported security data breaches, based on the number of affected accounts. TJX said the cost of the MasterCard settlement is reflected in a previous charge it took for data breaches. It said issuers with at least 90% of the eligible accounts must agree to the settlement by May 2 for it to take effect. TJX shares were up 65 cents, or 1.9%, to $34.69 while MasterCard shares fell $3.04, or 1.3%, to $226.56 in afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange. Copyright 2008 Reuters Limited.
