NEW YORK (AP) From tortured psychotherapist to ... King Arthur?
Soulful Irish actor Gabriel Byrne will play the lead role in the Lerner and Loewe musical Camelot at Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center on May 7-10. Byrne won rave reviews and plenty of female fans for his role as a troubled psychotherapist on the HBO series, In Treatment, which premiered in January. His character, Paul Weston, is grappling with a series of challenging clients while his own marriage is falling apart. The Tony Award-winning Camelot, with book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe, first appeared on Broadway in 1960. Based on T.H. White's novel, The Once and Future King, the tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table features such popular tunes as Camelot,How to Handle a Woman, and What Do the Simple Folk Do? Byrne will perform opposite Marin Mazzie as Guenevere; she recently appeared on Broadway in Spamalot. Those parts were played in the original Broadway production by Richard Burton and Julie Andrews, with Robert Goulet as Lancelot. The musical was made into a 1967 film with Richard Harris and Vanessa Redgrave, and won three Oscars. Byrne's film credits include Miller's Crossing,The Man in the Iron Mask,Stigmata and The Usual Suspects. On stage, he has played leading roles at London's Royal Court Theatre and in the Broadway revival of Eugene O'Neill's A Touch of the Poet. The May 8 performance at Lincoln Center will be broadcast nationally on PBS. _ Copyright 2008 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
