We've just tasted more than 140 wines available in most LCBO stores. The three featured here were among a dozen that rose to the top of the class. More winners will be featured in upcoming columns, as well as fab new arrivals.

Today we have a sauvignon blanc that would make a perfect party-starter, a versatile chardonnay and, as you venture onto the back deck and fire up the barbecue, a seductive shiraz. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did. Cheers!

MontGras 2006 Sauvignon Blanc Reserva $11.15 (Chile)

A pleasant sipping white for the patio from a solid Chilean producer. Aromas of apricot, lime and peeled apple. The flavours seem slightly sweet on first impression, with ripe apple and pear. The finish shows lingering hints of spicy white peach and citrus. This is very good value for your money. Think hors d'oeuvres.

Concha Y Toro Casillero del Diablo 2007 Chardonnay $11.95 (Chile)

This really was outstanding in a tasting of general list whites the other day. Aromas of floral apple, lime and pear lead into flavours of spicy apple. There's a hint of butter from judicious use of oak and a lovely mouth feel. The finish picks up tropical nuances such as crushed pineapple and lime spice. Excellent value.

Angove's Red Belly 2006 Black Shiraz $16.95 (Australia)

Big-hearted flavours make you want to fire up the barbie for special guests. The upfront aromas show opulent black cherry, cassis and smoked meat. On the palate, minty layers of chocolate, black cherry and vanilla bean unfold. The cedar spine lingers long into the ripe, fleshy, cherry finish. Definitely a keeper, mate.
